Why you’ve hit a health plateau – and why it’s not a bad thing

·

Have you ever felt like you were making great progress with your health goals — whether it was weight loss, energy levels, or digestive improvements — and then everything just… stopped? That frustrating pause is known as a health plateau or weight loss plateau, and it’s something I see often in clinic. But here’s the thing:

A plateau is not a failure. It’s a sign your body is asking for something different.

Let’s explore why plateaus happen, what they really mean, and how you can support your body through them, without losing motivation.

What is a plateau in health?

A plateau refers to a period where your visible progress stalls. You’re still following your plan — eating well, moving your body, supporting your stress — yet nothing seems to shift.

You stop losing weight
Your energy doesn’t lift.
Your symptoms aren’t improving.

This can feel discouraging, but your body isn’t broken. It’s likely adapting, recalibrating, and trying to maintain balance (homeostasis). These pauses often happen before the next stage of progress.

Why do plateaus happen?

Here are four of the most common contributors:

  1. Chronic stress and cortisol
Stress impacts everything from metabolism to gut health to hormones. Elevated cortisol can slow down weight loss, impair sleep, and affect digestion — all of which can contribute to a plateau.
  2. Undereating or unbalanced meals
Your body needs fuel to function well. Skipping meals or eating too little (especially protein) can trigger the body’s conservation mode, slowing your metabolism and leading to stalled progress.
  3. Inadequate or excessive exercise
Too much high-intensity exercise can increase stress hormones, while too little movement may reduce your energy output. Walking, functional training, and resistance workouts offer a balanced approach.
  4. Liver congestion
Your liver processes hormones, toxins, and fats. If it’s under pressure from environmental toxins, alcohol, or poor diet, it can slow down fat metabolism and hormone clearance.

How to break through a plateau

Here are some gentle but powerful strategies I recommend:

  • Stick with your foundations. Sleep, hydration, protein, veggies, movement, and mindfulness matter more than any one trick.
  • Reassess your stress. A hidden source of stress may be disrupting your progress.
  • Nourish your liver. Add bitter greens, cruciferous veggies, and reduce alcohol.
  • Support your nervous system. Breathwork, gentle walking, time in nature, and boundaries with tech can make a huge difference.
  • Track non-scale victories. Better digestion, reduced cravings, or more stable moods all count.

The mindset shift: Progress isn’t always visible

So often we focus only on what we can measure, e.g. weight, centimetres, steps. But what about what we feel?

Ask yourself:

  • Am I more consistent than I used to be?
  • Is my sleep better?
  • Are my moods more stable?
  • Am I feeling more connected to my body?

If the answer is yes to any of these — that’s progress.
You are not stuck. You’re in a transition phase.

If you’re currently in a health plateau, take a deep breath. It’s not a sign to give up. It’s a sign to lean in and listen more closely to what your body needs.

This is often where the real breakthroughs happen. It’s not from doing more, but from doing things differently.
